Some people on here actually think Powell Valley is still a great coaching job, but it all reality it is not even a top five coaching position. I am surprised that it has drawn what little interest it has. Who wants to come to a down program in the mess that is Wise Co. Schools and get in a political firestorm and coach football. Powell Valley is not the second best program in Virginia and has not been for ten years. When will reality sit in and when will people realize that PV is just about to be a footnote in the history books of VHSL football. You can not continue in the past so you might as well get ready cause things are changing.
If someone goes into a job interview and they have coached at powell valley and had a .500 or better record, he is going to have a much better shot than a guy who comes in from coeburn with the same record, politics aside. PV may not be what they once were, but you can't dismiss the history, especially when you leave Southwest Virginia. That's my point.
How can you say or think that? PV may not be what they used to be. They're obviously in a big drought that they may not get out of because it's not going to last much longer as a school.
You can't ignore what all Powell Valley has done. It's like Notre Dame. They're not really any good now but if their coaching position is open, you can't ignore their past. The same goes for Michigan, who unless I am wrong has the highest winning percentage.
Right now, I believe Powell Valley, just in 30 years has the most state titles of any A school in Virginia. They may not be any good right now but you can't ignore that.
Whoever gets the position (Travis) they will have some good athletes to work with. Things will get on track and they will be able to compete. We have to admit that PV has a heck of a schedule to compete in as well, I think this makes teams better when they play better competetion guys. I am sure the weight lifting program will be a high priority along with discpline to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done and do it that way all the time.

I am not ignoring PV's history, I said it will just be a footnote in history real soon. You have to move on. We do not get in a wagon train and go west anymore, we drive or fly. We don't have outhouses anymore we have indoor plumbing. Things change, the hell that has been raised just on this web site (about Wise County, and consolidation) would be enough to discourage anyone not to have anything to do with the mess that is Wise County. If you are a coach and want to move to job where you will finish 5-5 go ahead, but your telling me 5-5 is better because it is at PV. Come on man.
First of all I said .500 or better and second of all it is absolutely true that a .500 or better record at PV is gonna get you farther in the interview process than a .500 or better record at Coeburn and that is simply because of the history AND the schedule. May mean the difference between the bottom of the pile of resumes and the top.
Also, I never said anybody WANTED to get a job and go 5-5. If a coach is worth anything he wants to win every game.
And as far as your logic regarding methods of transportation and delapidated defication facilities, if you think that things have changed that much since the 1990's, I guess in 10 years we will be crapping in our cell phones.![]()
On paper you are right Palmer is the man, but I guess that doesnt matter in situations like this. You are right in saying that the interview process is usually for nothing because they already have their mind made up, but they have to do the interview process.
Travis seems to be the popular choice as of now, is this fair to Palmer? I would have to agree with you and actually say it is not fair, but as we both know this is the way it goes. I feel Travis can and will do a good job and I also believe Palmer would do a good job. For that matter I think Morris would do a good job as well. The decision has not been announced yet so who know the outcome? I think it will be Turner, but it could be a shocker as they announce Palmer as new head coach.
